Why Activity Leads to Opportunity

take action to achieve

Sometimes when we sit down to reassess where we are in life it can be frustrating. We look at opportunities that passed us by or never materialized. We think about things we want to be doing, but aren’t. We feel lost.

After constantly whipping myself to make changes in my life over the years, I’ve come to realize that that approach doesn’t work. There’s only one thing that helps. You have to take some kind of action. You need to take consistent steps forward, and this action will drastically change your path. That path won’t be a straight line. It will be winding, but it will be taking you forward.

If I consistently try to produce quality work, then I have no doubts that in six months my blog will be read by more people, or that my business will have new clients, new services or be taking a completely different approach. As you begin to do more, create more, produce more, things start to happen.

Why do we avoid taking action?

There are usually a couple of reasons that we don’t follow through on the things we wish we would do. Top of the list tends to be a fear of failing. We don’t want others to see us make a mistake. It hurts our ego. But honestly, it’s not failing as long as you learn. And the point of taking small steps is to ensure any missteps are easy to correct.

Another reason is not knowing how to get started. It can be difficult if you want to learn a new skill, change jobs/industries, and generally get out of your comfort zone. But as Michael Jordan said, “you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” If you don’t know how to get started, then you can usually ask Google. She knows everything!

Your action is perceived as success

The simple fact that you are doing something more than the ordinary 9-5 routine differentiates you from 95% of people. It attracts positive attention. So many of us are caught up in our daily routines, so seeing someone who is taking a chance and doing something unique is already a sign of success. Even if you’re scared out of your mind at the moment, use that feeling of success to move forward.

Activity leads to opportunity

As you produce more of your work, sell more of your products and come in contact with more people, it’s inevitable that one of those contacts will present you with a new opportunity. Maybe it’s a guest blog post, a chance to speak at an event, or an introduction to an investor or business partner. Whatever it is, embrace it and continue to take the next step.

Success breeds success

Do you ever wonder why the most successful entrepreneurs tend to start multiple businesses? They’re called serial entrepreneurs and they understand that the world is filled with endless opportunities. These are the people that can’t wait to get out of bed and try to solve a new problem. They build on past wins to create future success.

The point in all of this is that today is the best time to get started. Even if it’s not the “right” path, it’s still a different path than the one you’re on today. Remember that insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Make today different. Get started doing something you believe in. You’ll be surprised at the amount of wonderful things that start to happen.
